At last, whispers in the dark about the live action TV series! According to the MTV Movies Blog, Rose Byrne (Dorme on Attack of the Clones) reveals casting is currently in progress for the anticipated Lucas project. “A lot of my friends have been auditioning for it,” she states. This was during a promotional event for the film “Knowing” starring Nicolas Cage.

This is very interesting news indeed. It’s hard to speculate on casting candidates without knowing what characters are being cast, but more news bits are sure to be forthcoming.

I know what you’re thinking. ‘What’s this Clone Wars thing all of a sudden, and why is it showing on theaters? It’s a cartoon, right? Isn’t it going to end up on television? Am I right to just wait for the DVD?’

Wrong. Clone Wars isn’t just a cartoon movie. It’s a phenomenon, and you don’t want to miss it. CGI is it, baby. Live action is dead (editor’s note: until 2009, that is). It’s also a comic book sensation.

Courtesy of Titan Magazines (the UK publisher of Star Wars magazines and comics) and in celebration of the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Comic #4.36 (on sale 14 August), JediNet is pleased to provide the following spiffy wallpapers for download. You see, it’s all part of the Clone Wars conspiracy. But it’s fun, so you might as well go along for the ride. Your computer screen will thank you for it.

Here is a gallery of the wallpaper images:

Pretty cool, huh? To get the wallpapers, simply download the zip file. Enjoy!

So far, so good.

Denise Martin of the LA Times wrote about her first look at the Clone Wars series. Overall, she gives a favorable review, mentioning that this animated series rivals or bests the live-action prequels. That is an interesting comment to say the least, but she insists that it’s “not an overstatement.” She continues:

The episode looked great — not Pixar-amazing, but certainly in line with movies like “Kung Fu Panda” — but it’s the writing that puts it heads above the franchise’s more recent additions. Sure, the series is ultimately aimed at kids, but this audience was laughing. And the comedy here is expected — in a good way. It doesn’t come from Anakin saying things like, “I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth” — as amusing as that was in “Attack of the Clones.”

How reassuring. It looks as if the TV series (and the theatrical premiere, by extension) will at least enjoy a measure of critical success.

But not everyone was impressed with their screening of the episode. Maureen Ryan of the Tribune felt that story and emotional appeal were wanting, characters lacked depth, and humor was forced. She writes:

I don’t expect the “Clone Wars” team to create something that is “Wall*E’s” equal, don’t get me wrong. That’d be unfair, not least from a budget perspective. But at this point, I despair of ever see anything that beautiful, that heartfelt and that moving coming from the “Star Wars” universe. With every new TV and film project, that world is drained of more magic.

I’ll still probably buy more old-school “Star Wars” gear than I can carry at San Diego Comic-Con in a few weeks. But for this Boba Fett fanatic, the products of George Lucas’ sci-fi empire long ago reached the point of diminishing returns.

So there you have it. What exactly will you find when you enter the dark crowded theater this August 15? Only what you take with you.

If you’ve gotten behind on the Star Wars TV show news and are looking for a quick and dirty rundown of what we know so far, Tom Burns of The Deadbolt has been gracious enough to write up a quick summary. In addition, he included what he has described as “reckless, baseless suppositions” about what that show might be like:

The series will follow a multitude of character-based storylines – much like Heroes – that will occasionally converge during sweeps months. We’ll have a bounty hunter plotline that introduces a new intergalactic space-bail-bondsman into the mix, showing us the seamier side of the Star Wars universe. (Boba Fett will appear though – more on that later.) We’ll follow some new Imperial recruits – some true Palpatine believers, some a little more dubious… we’re imagining an Alias agent/counteragent vibe. There’ll be a whole Tatooine-set storyline, following pod-racing, the slave situation (one of the most dangling plot threads ever from Phantom Menace), the Hutts and their mafia organization, green dancing girls, and the founding of the Mos Eisley Cantina. (C’mon, it can be the Cheers of the 21st century! Maybe they can get Bea Arthur to resume her role as the singing bartender from the Christmas Special.) And we’ll see the early days of the Rebel resistance – no Leia or anything, but lots of stuff set on Alderan and perhaps some cameos from Mon Mothma and the “many Bothians” who died to steal the Death Star Plans.

Read more of the article, and a list of what he wants (and doesn’t want) to see in the series, pay his site a visit.
