Luke’s Saber Going to Space

Filed under: Fandom — Trilogist at 1:06 pm on Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Like the Olympic torch, the movie prop will make a high-security ceremonial journey from LucasFilm to Houston, Texas. In the end, Luke Skywalker’s light saber will be in orbit, aboard the space shuttle Discovery.

From Aero-news:

Movie Prop Will Fly Aboard Discovery

To commemorate the 30th
anniversary of the ‘Star Wars’ movie franchise, the series
production company, Lucasfilm and the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration decided to put something from the movie in
space.

Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber — the prop, anyway — will join
astronauts in October on the space shuttle Discovery, said the
production company along with NASA and Southwest Airlines.

The lightsaber will leave the Lucasfilm headquarters in northern
California August 28 where Chewbacca — well, an actor in a Wookie
suit — will personally hand it over to NASA Space Center Houston
representatives at Oakland International Airport during a
ceremony.

It will then be flown to Houston, where Imperial stormtroopers
(OK, more actors) will escort it from gate 47 in William P. Hobby
Airport to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in a caravan of Hummer
SUVs — complete with a police escort — along with R2-D2 and other
characters from the film.

The lightsaber is to be secured in a vault once used to house
moon samples until the shuttle launch.

Family Guy Star Wars Premiere

Filed under: Fandom — Trilogist at 8:08 am on Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Mark your calendars, September 23 is the date to be on the couch for some Sunday evening primetime television. The season premiere of Family Guy entitled “Blue Harvest” will air.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the episode:

The Griffin family is stuck at home during a blackout. With no TV to entertain them, Peter decides to tell a story that is a retelling of the key scenes and narrative from “Star Wars: A New Hope,” using “Family Guy” characters.

And some additional info:

At the 2007 Comic Con International convention, a series of clips was shown at a panel for Family Guy from the season premiere episode. The clips showed the Family Guy characters dressed as Star Wars characters; Peter Griffin as Han Solo, Lois Griffin as Princess Leia, Meg Griffin as the trash compactor monster Dianoga, Chris Griffin as Luke Skywalker, Stewie Griffin as Darth Vader, and Brian as Chewbacca, along with the regular cast of characters who are also disguised as Star Wars characters, including Glenn Quagmire as C-3PO, Cleveland Brown as R2-D2, and Herbert as Obi Wan Kenobi.

Star Wars: the Last Supper

This is by Eric Deschamps, for Giant Magazine. He writes: “It was quite a challenge for me, especially trying to get the likenesses to semi-work. They wanted selected Star Wars characters in the Last Supper. I started out staying really close to the poses in the actual last supper painting then ended up straying away from them a bit to make the wide range of characters fit.”
